Richard Avedon. In the American West

Between 1979 and 1984 Richard Avedon spent his summers driving the American West and photographing more than a thousand people who never sat for a fashion photographer — ranch hands, miners, drifters, carnival workers — each one outdoors, in daylight, against a plain white sheet. The 110 prints he made for the book are all here, with his working Polaroids and his letters to the sitters. Nobody is posed and nobody is flattered, and the faces stay with you longer than the West does. Until Nov 1 the entrance is up the steps at Via Milano 9a, round the side of the palazzo.
