The altar Augustus put up for the peace he had just finished winning, dug back out of the ground in pieces and set inside a glass box by Richard Meier on the river. The box caused a row when it opened and I like it — the light is right and you can walk all the way round the thing. Go close to the long sides: the procession carved along them is the imperial family, and one of the children is holding on to the man in front of him. Augustus’ mausoleum is the round ruin next door.
