Every time I have visitors in Rome, I take them there, because it is simply a place you have to see. Inside, the Pietà of Michelangelo is behind glass on the right as you enter, and the scale of the nave only lands when you notice how far away the people at the far end are. If you come outside the high season, when there are no chairs in the nave, you get a real sense of the size. Entry is free, but if you are in a hurry, or with a group including people who can’t stand in line too long, it is worth paying the €7 fee on the official site to get in faster. I also had the chance to climb up to the dome, and it is absolutely worth it: the view is unforgettable, and you look down inside the Vatican too. One practical thing: shoulders and knees covered, or you will not get in.
