Bert’s take

Going to Ostia Antica is definitely one of my top recommendations for anyone looking for a nice day’s escape from Rome. It is easily reachable by train: you take the line from Piramide station straight to Ostia Antica, and the walk from the station is about ten minutes. This is the old port of Rome — a remarkable archaeological site, smaller than Pompeii but much more accessible if you are staying in the city. I went in the winter, so the mosaics that are the highlight of the place were covered by tarps. It was a beautiful day though, and it was so nice to walk freely through this beautiful ancient place. I totally recommend it, especially if you have kids and want to visit an archaeological site together.
