Parco degli Acquedotti is well outside the centre — you take Metro A, the orange line, almost all the way to the end, get off at Giulio Agricola, then walk ten or fifteen minutes to the entrance. It is absolutely worth the trip. The ancient arches of the Aqua Claudia still stand in the middle of an open field, with joggers and cyclists passing beneath them, and there is no other view like it in Rome. I went for the first time on a Sunday: families gathered for parties, picnics under the trees, people like me resting and reading. It is the perfect spot to escape the summer heat and slow down for an afternoon. Anyone who knows their classics will recognise it — this is where Fellini shot the opening scene of La Dolce Vita, with the helicopter carrying the statue of Christ over the aqueducts.
